The Word of the Gecko

My grandmother spent an entire life
In fear of the gecko’s word

From the courtyard, from the verandah
Sometimes from the pillar.
Sometimes from the corner
Where floor meets ceiling

At times the same gecko
On different scales
At other times, different geckos
As one threnody

In her life the gecko word
Had turned into the ubiquitous
Voice of almighty god

Somehow the day she died
All the geckos observed silence
