| 2 Scent of acid
Performer (with contact microphone) works
behind screen. Two mirrors are placed so audience can see image of performer
reflected twice on either side of the blank screen in front. (Use distorting
curved mirrors?)
On screen, word by word then line by
line, project this text: All That Dead Image I In Imagination /All That
Dead Image / Imagine / All That Dead Image I In Imagination / All Dead
Image I Imagine. (Possibly project the Image between each.)
The performer performs these actions: turns
back to mirrors & looks at audience in mirrors using a handmirror;
eats with chopsticks; puts on hat: performs balances & contortions
developed from shapes on the Image.
The performer speaks this text: Appearance
does the damage - as if imagination were not gospel. Strip appearance of
illusion and there is a stench of acid as the glamour of reflectivity drains
from appearance, sign drains from experience and the fascination of the
real unravels.
The chorus (invisible / on tape) speaks:
words worse, enlarge, focus, wide waters withdrawn. mathematical interruption
of light, in line and in lines. speckle, move imagination in duplicate,
surrounded, speedlines gather, collide, like on node. sequenced
During the performance, two (or more) performers
scrub off the reflective material from behind the mirrors so that the reflected
image of the performer slowly degrades; their actions are stylised - they
are starkly lit when visible. If the chorus is live, rather than on tape,
they can also be revealed as the mirror images degrade.
